Profit per sale after VAT, cost and fees

Seven designs, one fits you

Short answer

Yes, you can make money dropshipping, but rarely fast. Three numbers decide it: profit per sale (realistically $8–15 on a $30 product), ad cost per sale and return rate. If ads cost more per sale than your margin, every order loses money.

Worked example for one product

Sample values, not a promise: €8 cost incl. shipping, €8 ad spend per sale, 19% VAT, payment fee approx. 2.9% + €0.30.

Retail price incl. 19% VAT€26.90
net of VAT€22.61
− Cost incl. shipping€8.00
− Payment fee€1.08
= Profit before ads€13.52
− Ad cost per sale€8.00
= Profit per sale€5.52

If ad cost rises to €14 per sale, the profit in this example is gone.

Three levers for more profit

  • Margin: look for products where at least half the net retail price is left after cost and shipping.
  • Ad cost: a clear promise, good images and a video lower cost per sale more than a bigger budget.
  • Basket size: bundles, accessories and quantity discounts raise revenue per order at the same ad cost.

Common mistakes

  • Picking products by gut feeling instead of numbers.
  • Hiding three-week delivery times, which leads to cancellations and bad reviews.
  • Scaling before a product is profitable on a small budget.
  • Believing courses that promise fixed monthly income.

FAQ

How much do dropshippers make per month?

It varies widely and is zero or negative for many at the start. The only honest answer is a per-product calculation: net price minus cost, shipping, fees and ads.

Is dropshipping passive income?

No. Orders, support, returns and ads take ongoing time. A lot can be automated, but not everything.
